Where to begin. I love the appetizer/small plate concept for sharing amongst friends. However, this is not 2010! Come on, Jose (as if you even remember this investment property...just saying), what happened to your vision -the creativity, the future of culinary hospitality? All, long past and far gone. Yes, liquid nitro and cotton candy machines were cool ten years ago,


“Tasty food but at exorbitant price”

The food was tasty but very expensive. We had to wait inside for long despite having made the reservation before we could be seated. The waitress was unable to explain the menu and we were not interested in listening to her making excuses.

 What business can survive in Qatar under this high exorbitant rent for shops?



Firstly, in order to do business in Qatar, you will require a Qatari to be the sponsor of your business. You will have to split the partnership 49-51, with 51 going to the sponsor.

Usually the sponsor is the investing partner and you are the working partner in the business.

Now in order to open any business in Qatar, you require a large investment. Usually locals invest as they get such loans from banks. Foreigners also do this if they have the money(or atleast half of it).

Permissions,paperwork and registrations will be done by you with support from your sponsor.

I do not have a personal interest in business, but from what I know if you are successful in Qatar, you will get rich very quickly(no taxes to pay).

In my whole life that I am in Qatar, in my opinion I can tell you that there are 3 businesses that run better than the other.

1) Restaurants : Everybody loves to eat in Qatar. Indian restaurants run exceptionally well than others. Though this largely depends on the taste of the food you serve. Getting a CR for a restaurant isn't so hard as compared to other businesses.

In order to be a hit with the expats, you need to open a cheap and simple restaurant, if you serve delicious biryani and Indian dishes, you will see your restaurant become popular without any advertising or marketing. In Ramadan give people free samples of select dishes to impress them. All the food must be fresh and tasty. That is all you will need to do.

In this business you will have to be attentive towards hygiene. Qatar has strict rules and frequent inspections. They will close your shop no matter what connections you have.

2) Garage : After food, everyone is lazy to walk. We walk upto our Land Cruisers and zoom off. Qatar is a country which is still amateur at public transport systems. That problem is solved because almost Everybody has a car. Kids, women everyone drives. They drive fast and dangerously making the cars worked up more than usual. On an average every family has 3 cars. Qataris tend to have more than 5.

The maintenance of this car is done at garages obviously which makes them always busy. I would say that there are more cars than people in Qatar.

In order to open a garage you will need more investment than a restaurant as there are machines, hydraulic jacks, specialised workforce, pits to change the oil etc. This will be a one time investment, if you have a spare parts shop attached to it, you're in for a roll. I have seen friends who opened a garage and 5 years later driving a Lexus lx 570(non qataris). Also if you have tie ups with insurance companies your business is never bound to fail.

In this business you will have to be careful about fraud and overcharging for spare parts. Also in order to be successful please have mechanics who master in Toyota,Nissan,Honda,Hyundai,BMW,Dodge,Mercedes.

3) Construction : I kept this as the last option because it won't be so easy to start a construction company. You will need an influential sponsor who can get you contracts. The startup is more than the previous two ventures combined. You can rent the equipment, but you will need to have a large labour force and engineers on your team. If you do get contracts and your work is always complete on time, you will be a billionaire in Qatar in a few years.

This business is difficult because there are already a lot of such companies competing in Qatar. You will have a hard time initially until you get big contracts for malls or residential compounds.

Business isn't an easy thing to do in Qatar. There are cases where the sponsor can get greedy and takeover the business from you. Then again this largely depends on the person he is and your relation with him. Qataris from respected religious families don't do this.

Once you start, with hard work and dedication, you can be successful. Initially the high office/space rent will feel like a burden, later you won't even think about it.


Those businesses that are owned by sheikhs and/or prominent citizens or residents that see business ownership more as a point of pride than an investment.

Some businesses can "survive," and may create positive cash flows for their owners, but they are still likely "poor investments," in that if you took the same capital and invested it in the same exact business in a different country, you would likely see a much higher return on your invested capital.

For example, if you start a Subway franchise in Qatar, you have to pay enormous rents for a good location with decent foot traffic (e.g. a major mall) AND you have to "own your employees," because of the kafala system there is no real labor market in Qatar. You would have to "import" labor and pay for their housing, transport, visas and food, etc. Then you would also have to pay higher prices for your inputs (ingredients, etc), because of the high import costs. The best Subway franchise in Qatar made around $5K per month gross in Qatar...about half to a quarter what you would gross if you opened a franchise in a small city in the United States.

Many businesses operate at a loss or just barely, because residents feel pride in owning Qatari businesses and they feel more comfortable investing "at home," despite Qatar's small size and high rents making it a less than ideal place for invested capital.
